The Secret

Hello! I hope you had a great weekend! We went and saw the new Indiana Jones movie on Saturday morning...it was great! If you like those films, that is. My husband said "I didn't like it as much as some of the others, but I thought it was good." The movie was in keeping with the others in terms of the humor and the writing, so it was a refreshing break from the over-digitized flicks of today. I'm sure this one was plenty digitized, but it would have been for the backgrounds (and I couldn't tell one way or another). Overall, it was a fun movie. Onto the next topic...
I promised to mention the book I'm reading in my last post. Most of you out there have heard of it or have read it and I finally jumped in to see what it was all about. It's called "The Secret" by Rhonda Byrne. I've heard all about it for the past 2 years on blogs, in the workplace, and on television. I had the gist: "Think positively and you will attract good things." But I decided to see what else it had to say and I'm glad I did! I've recently decided to take a more positive stance in my life in hopes that I would feel more energetic and that it will attract my hopes and dreams my way. This book helps confirm that this is a worthy stance to be taking and also gives tips and thoughts on how to enhance that. I always knew that visualizing and FEELING what I most want to happen was important, and I'd just sort of stopped practicing that. Perhaps I became pessimistic. The book reminds me to live like I already have what I want and that will attract it to me. To affirm every day that I am abundant, I have what I need and want. Since I want to have children, it is helpful to say "I am a great Mom" instead of "I wish I were a Mom." According to the book, wishing only brings MORE wishing. Worry brings MORE worry. Negative brings MORE negative. There is mention in the book about how Mother Theresa was asked to join an anti-war rally and she said "tell me when there is a pro-peace rally...I will go to that!" This shift in thinking takes the focus off the negative connotations and puts in on the positive ones instead. The other good thought I'm getting from this book is that if you want something so bad that you are obsessed and feel like you NEED it then you are choking that energy and keeping that very thing from coming to you. The book implies that you should ask once and let it go. It asks us to assume we are going to get what we want (much like when we place an order from a catalog and assume it's on it's way) and let it go. Then, visualize HAVING that thing (for me it's lots of shop orders, a baby, etc.) It's teaching me to MAINTAIN the positive mindset and try to catch myself when I'm thinking or dwelling on something negative. I figure, it can't hurt to give it a try. I've found pictures that represent the things I most want to bring to my life and business and I have them in a folder on my computer. I look at the pictures each day and I make sure to smile and feel joy knowing these things will be coming to me. I'm just going to let everything unfold as it should and I'm happy with knowing just what I want and who I want to be. This brings so much positive energy around me...and makes trying this new way so worth it. I know it will take practice, but I'm willing to do it. I'll let you know when any of my wishes come to me! You can find out more about The Secret and order the movie (or view it online for a small fee) here.

I bought this book awhile back and (like a few others on my nightstand) I have yet to crack it open. But I'm moving this one to the top of the pile!

Hi Megan - That is so funny that you wrote about The Secret. I remember reading one of your posts from a little while ago about how you were not going to focus on taking your temperatures etc. anymore and the first thing I thought was - "I should tell her about the Secret". But, whenever I mention the book to anyone, they think I'm an idiot giving in to one of Oprah's marketing schemes.

I learned about the laws of attraction when I was a teenager. My mother taught me about the same concepts discussed in the Secret, and how to use visualization to attract what you want. I keep a diary where I write my "thank yous" every night (for the things I would like to attract to my life, not necessarily the things I have already - i.e. I am so happy and thankful now that I...). The best thing is going back to my "thank you" diary months later and checking off the things I have received or accomplishments I have made. I have learned some really useful visualization methods that have truly changed my life.

One of the funniest things that has happened to me was that I had been focusing on finding a new C&P for the studio. One day I made room for it in my basement, I visualized what it would look like and sound like while I used it in the space. Honest to God, two days later I got an email about a guy selling his C&P not even 30 mins from my house.

Focusing very specifically on what you want, and then truly believing that if it is right for you that the universe (or God, or whoever you believe in) will deliver, is very comforting. Whatever it is you want will come, maybe not this very second, but eventually :)

Ok, I'm writing a novel here...

Wow Erin! That's all so amazing and more examples of great things that can happen! It's funny because I wrote that post you referred to and then I started seeing shows with that advice. Then I saw articles. Then I started hearing it all around me. All without trying. It was like the cosmos trying to tell me something. So I went and got the book last week and it's made so much sense. Without realizing it, I had put it into practice when I decided to stop taking temps, etc. I'd thought I was helping myself back then...making sure I knew "when" would be right and making sure I had a log "just in case." I now realize that those practices were showing a full lack of trust and faith that I would get what I want. They were doubtful actions and now I know better. It's funny you thought about The Secret then when you saw my post. I like your idea about the journal; I've decided to start that too. Look how great it's working for you! :) Thanks for your feedback!

Thanks for this post Megan! I have been hearing so much about this, and it being pushed by Oprah--who I have nothing against--but my own cynicism kind of stopped me from looking into it. But after I read your post I Netflixed the movie and watched it last night...and my cynicism aside it all seems so clear now. I have been trying to move to a new city and struggling with where, when, how, etc...but now I'm just moving. I'm focusing on moving and leaving the rest to the universe. Last night I fell asleep visualizing my new house! Thank you:)

I enjoyed the post and the comments. In the last months I've read Eckhart Tolle's "The Power of Now" and "A New Earth," which put the power for my life right back in my own hands. I highly recommend both books, as well as Eckhart's A New Earth webcasts with Oprah available on Oprah.com.
